Step 1. Determine what needs to be hauled away

In our opinion, this is the toughest step in the entire junk removal process. Figuring out what items need to be hauled away is not always easy. There could potentially be certain rooms with more clutter in them, or there might be many family heirlooms that you don’t want to completely toss out.

Step 2. Deal with the stress

During the process of determining what items to get rid of, there are many emotions that come along with it. Common stress points people might have in this stage can include:

  • Guilt: From throwing away items others may have valued.
  • Anger: Can come from the stress of determining what items to throw out.
  • Sadness: From seeing beloved items have to go. 

No matter how you feel, understand this process is not easy, and you are not alone!

Step 3. Formulate a plan to get rid of the items

The next step in the process is to create a plan for getting rid of your items. You will need to determine a couple things: 

  • Who will help me remove the items from my home?
  • Do the items need to be taken to the dump or can they be donated, recycled, or potentially upcycled?
  • Are there any hazardous items to get rid of, and how?
  • How will the items be hauled off?
  • Do I need to rent a dumpster?
  • Determine if you should use a junk removal company.

After answering these questions, you will know much more about how you are going to get rid of your unwanted items. 

Step 4. Begin removing the items

Now that you have carefully determined what items need to go, dealt with the emotions, and created a plan to get your items hauled off, it is now time to execute! It doesn’t matter if you and your friends are working to remove a few items for donation or completing an entire house cleanout; you have carefully prepped and made the process that much simpler.
